Government Breaks Ground for New Siaya County Hospital Complex

A Milestone in Transforming Healthcare Access and Equity

Kenya’s health sector recorded a historic milestone today with the groundbreaking of a new hospital complex at the Siaya County Referral Hospital. The ceremony was graced by senior leaders including the Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, Siaya Governor Hon. James Orengo, and senior officials from both the national and county governments.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Oluga described the project as a turning point in Siaya’s health journey. He highlighted the county’s progress in maternal health and immunization, but also pointed to persistent challenges such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, diabetes, and hypertension. The new facility, he noted, is not just about expanding infrastructure but about delivering hope, equity, and quality healthcare for all residents.

National Government Support for Siaya’s Health Sector

Dr. Oluga underscored the National Government’s continued support, noting the success of the National Equipment Supplies Program (NESP) which has already provided ultrasound machines to Siaya County Referral Hospital and Rambwa Sub-County Hospital, benefitting thousands of patients.

He further assured residents that requests for digital X-ray units, dialysis machines, laboratory equipment, and modern theatre facilities are being prioritized. He also confirmed that the Urenga Level 3A Hospital, a KSh 50 million project, is nearing completion.

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Siaya

On the progress of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Dr. Oluga reported that:

  • 404,088 Siaya residents (40.7% of the population) are registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA).
  • Of these, 26.7% are fully paid up and actively contributing.
  • Nationally, over 26 million Kenyans are registered, with 7.3 million active contributors.

What the New Hospital Complex Means for Siaya

Once complete, the hospital will:

  • Provide advanced diagnostic, surgical, and emergency services.
  • Expand specialized care in cardiology, oncology, and mental health.
  • Decongest lower-level facilities.
  • Create jobs and training opportunities for healthcare workers.

Dr. Oluga emphasized that the project is a true partnership between the national and county governments, ensuring that “children born in Siaya have the same chance of survival and wellbeing as those in Nairobi.

This foundation is not only of stone and cement, but of dignity and service,” he said, urging leaders and communities to unite in building a healthier, stronger Kenya.

A Brighter, Healthier Future

The groundbreaking of the Siaya County Hospital Complex marks a new era for healthcare in the region. By combining infrastructure, resources, and partnerships, Siaya is setting a standard for inclusive, equitable, and transformative healthcare.
